Storing your furniture in a climate-controlled unit decreases the risks of damage to it. This is because climate-controlled facilities avoid humidity, extreme heat, and extreme cold. Climate control storage also decreases the risk of pests. While climate-controlled storage is often a good choice, it is not necessarily the right choice for storing furniture. When deciding if you need a climate-controlled storage unit for your furniture, there are two questions you need to ask yourself.

How Long Will I Be Storing My Furniture?

Consider the length of time you will be storing your furniture. Storing items temporarily is very different than storing items long term. A short term storage solution often is not exposed to the same harsh elements that long term storage is. If you are moving and just need to store your items temporarily, climate-controlled storage is often not necessary. However, if your furniture will be stored for more than one year, it will endure all seasons and temperatures. Under these conditions, climate-controlled storage is usually the best decision. This leads us to the next question:

What Is The Climate Like Where I Am Storing My Furniture?

Think about what the weather is like where you will be storing your furniture. Will there be extreme temperatures? Extremely hot and extremely cold temperatures will ruin many furniture materials, from leather to wood. Items can melt, warp, and snap, in these extreme temperatures. Also, consider if there will be lots of rain and high humidity. This can result in ruined furniture, for a wide variety of materials. It also may result in more bugs and other pests surrounding the area, which will ruin furniture if they get in your storage unit. Climate controlled units can combat these issues, making them a better choice for storing items in harsh conditions.

By considering these two questions you will be able to better decide if climate-controlled storage is right for you. Furniture is expensive to replace, so it’s best to take the time to weigh your options and make an informed decision.
